Spatial Media / Nature of Code / Thesis
This project is a data visualization that maps the number of unemployed people in different countries and cities based on statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The initial sketch represents the number of unemployed in NYC (per thousand).
The figures are depicted as aimless wanderers who walk the city with no specific destination.
For a website presentation there will be a pulldown menu allowing viewers to compare and contrast different cities.

For the installation I will use blob detection and background subtraction to isolate the shape of a figure. As soon as a shadow crosses the projection the figures aimlessly wandering the urban environment will flock to that shadow shape and become it. This shadow represents the individual workers. It becomes a single figure made of many, ie a work force, that at this moment in time is no longer working. After a specified duration of time or when the shadow disappears the figures will resume their urban meanderings.
