The Life and Death of Buildings
Deep River, Los Angeles, CA, November 24 - December 23, 2001

"The Life and Death of Buildings." was an installation Nov-Dec 2001 at Deep River in Los Angeles. The title "The Life and Death of Buildings" comes from Jane Jacobs seminal text, "The Death and Life of Great American Cities." The work traced the transformation of urban space through the juxtaposition of historic and contemporary images. I used photographs of Los Angeles and images of other cities taken from the newspaper as well as other media sources. For this installation I wanted to look historically at how cities grow and change over time. Buildings are built, and demolished, streets are widened, then narrowed, urban centers come and go. The installation incorporated still and animated images.
